RED RUM RIDES AGAIN 50 YEARS AFTER FIRST GRAND NATIONAL VICTORY

Fifty years on from his first Grand National victory at Aintree racecourse, the legendary figure of Red Rum was seen once again in Liverpool, when appearing in hologram form in front of the iconic Royal Liver Building on the city’s waterfront.

The cutting-edge tribute to the horse known affectionately as Rummie – the only horse to win three Grand Nationals – was commissioned by bookmaker Coral to celebrate the 50^th anniversary of his first victory in the famous contest in 1973. Red Rum, trained by Ginger McCain, was also victorious in 1974 and 1977, and finished second in both 1975 and 1976.

The cutting-edge tribute to the horse known affectionately as Rummie – the only horse to win three Grand Nationals – was commissioned by bookmaker Coral to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first victory in the famous contest in 1973.

Red Rum also topped a poll commissioned by Coral to find the nation’s favourite Grand National winner of all time. More than 700 Racing Post readers took part in the survey which saw Red Rum voted number one, ahead of the two-time National hero, Tiger Roll, and the emotional 1981 winner, Aldaniti.

Coral’s David Stevens commented: “It might be 50 years since Red Rum won the first of those historic three Grand Nationals, but our survey shows he is still the most popular and best-loved winner of the most famous race in the world.”

“We hope his many fans will enjoy seeing Rummie come ‘back to life’, and we think the hologram is a fitting tribute to Red Rum on the anniversary of that famous first National victory.”
