With Northern Ireland’s Royal Portrush Golf Club set to open its doors from the 14th to the 21st of July for The 148th Open Championship, we are all eager to see which golf pro will take home the remaining titles of the 2018-2019 PGA tour. But who are the real winners off the golf course? 

Due to rise of social media, top athletes are no longer just considered sports idols or mere celebrities – they are increasingly operating as social media influencers. The use of sports players to endorse brands, products and services is nothing new. However, companies have begun to capitalise on sports stars social presence to tap into niche audiences with profitable returns.

The influence of major sporting stars on social media has been explored tenfold, so intrigued about the biggest golfers on Instagram and their real worth, discounted online golf shop GolfSupport.com sought to find out which of the bookies favourites to win the 2019 British Open Championship earn the most per post on Instagram.

To achieve this, Golf Support inserted the Instagram handle of the golf pro favourite to win the British Open into the Instagram Money Calculator by Influencer Marketing Hub, which estimates how much each golfer might earn per post on average, on their Instagram account*.

Golfsupport.com can reveal that the highest paid golfer on Instagram is unsurprisingly, none other than Tiger Woods, who thanks to his 1.9 million followers earns an average of £4,186 per Instagram post.

Thereafter,Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy, who is the bookies second favourite to win (8/1 odds), is the second highest earning golfer on Instagram with an average of £3,645 per post (1.7 million followers).

It comes as no surprise that the majority of those with the best odds to reign the British Open champion are US golfers. The following US golf pro’s also dominated the list of highest paid per social post:

Rickie Fowler (1.6m followers) earning on average £3,540, Jordan Spieth (1.5m followers) with £3,247 on average, Dustin Johnson (837k followers) with £2,655 on average and finally Brooks Koepka (542k followers) who despite being the bookies favourite to win (8/1 odds) ranks 7th highest paid with an average of £1,725 per post.

The following golfers were also among the highest earners on Instagram:

Justin Rose MBE (638k followers) who earns £1,700 per post and Jason Day (613k followers) with £1,946 on average,

Whilst England’s own Tommy Fleetwood (166k followers) coming in 10th with an average of £531 per Instagram Post.

 
* The top 14 golfers with the lowest odds on the shortest return and therefore most likely to win were selected as the bookies favourites to win.
